The New Rheem Theatre's mission will be to champion blockbuster movies, independent film and other media arts in an effort to stimulate and enrich the culture of the Lamorinda community and specifically the New Rheem Theater. The California Independent Film Festival Association is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit community-supported organization that continuously showcases a variety of films, festivals and performing arts. The CAIFFA through its management of The New Rheem Theater will bring in a vibrant, film based program to the historic venue.
As Moraga's premiere movie theater, The New Rheem Theatre will exhibit independent, family, international, documentary, narrative, and avant-garde films. Many of our films are presented with personal appearances by filmmakers, critics, and scholars to foster film appreciation and stimulate discussion. Beyond movies, we regularly host an array of live music, theater, comedy, poetry readings, and multimedia art by local and touring artists.
The New Rheem Theatre is dedicated to enhancing the cultural environment of Moraga and the Lamorinda area. Thus, we value the dynamic, ever-evolving relationship we share with our audience. We are proud of the partnerships that we've developed over the last 12 years with local nonprofits, schools, businesses, and other organizations. Our quality programming aims to both satisfy the community's wide range of tastes and interests and exhibit cutting edge work of the present and past, which otherwise would not be accessible if not for the California Independent Film Festival Association.
The New Rheem Theatre is open year round. Our box office will open half an hour before the first screening and closes just after the last screening begins. Our business office is open 10am - 6pm, Monday - Friday.
Rheem Theatre History
The Rheem Theatre was built in the late 50's by Donald Rheem and was originaly a single screen movie palace with a large stage and dance floor which the theatre retains and often uses to this day. It was closed during the 70's, and reopened as a performing arts venue in the 80's. During a remodel in the in the late 90's, three additional screens were added thus making the Rheem Theatre a 4 screen multiplex. Though the theatre has been consistently updated, it still retains its original art deco feel with Zodiac Style art in each house. |
